Issuer controls and risks

The issuer of a stock token keeps powerful controls over the mint. What they are, what they could do, and how owned surfaces them.

The extensions every stock mint carries

Reading the mints directly on-chain, every xStocks and Backpack Securities token has these Token-2022 extensions enabled by its issuer:

ExtensionWhat it allows
PausableThe issuer can halt every transfer of the token. While paused, nobody can buy, sell, sweep fees or claim rewards in that stock. Balances are untouched; they simply cannot move until the issuer unpauses.
Permanent delegateThe issuer can transfer or burn tokens from any account, including pool vaults and the own treasury, without the owner's signature. Issuers describe this as a compliance tool (sanctions, court orders, redemptions).
Default account stateCurrently initialized, so new accounts work immediately. The issuer could change it to frozen for new accounts.
Freeze authorityThe issuer can freeze individual token accounts.
Confidential transfersPresent but not auto-approved; irrelevant for pools.
Transfer hookPresent with no program set. The issuer retains the authority to set one in the future, which could add transfer restrictions.
Scaled UI amountDisplay multiplier for corporate actions, see Scaled UI Amount.

The same controls apply to every holder of these tokens anywhere on Solana, not only on owned.

Treasury and Redemption Risks

While the Owned treasury holds real-world stocks, redemptions are subject to:

  1. KYC/AML Checks: Interactive Brokers performs KYC/AML checks before processing redemptions.
  2. Issuer Controls: The issuer of the stock token can pause, freeze, or exercise the permanent delegate, which may affect redemptions.
  3. Regulatory Compliance: Redemptions are subject to regulatory requirements, which may delay or restrict the process.

How owned surfaces them

  • The issuer status bar on every token page and stock page shows whether transfers are active or paused, whether a permanent delegate is present, and whether the US market is open.
  • When a stock is paused, the trade panel is disabled with an explanation, launches on that stock are refused, and claims in that stock wait until transfers resume.
  • The stocks directory marks paused assets, and the API exposes paused, permanentDelegate and the extension list for every stock.

What owned cannot do

owned cannot unpause a token, cannot prevent a delegate transfer, and cannot recover funds an issuer moves. The treasury that holds unclaimed holder rewards is an ordinary Token-2022 account and is subject to the same powers as any other account. We publish the treasury address so the balance can be watched by anyone.

Practical guidance

  • Treat a paused stock as a temporary freeze of everything denominated in it, including fees you have not yet claimed. Claim rewards regularly rather than letting them accumulate.
  • Check the issuer's own terms. xStocks are issued by Backed Finance and are not offered to US or UK persons; Backpack Securities tokens are issued through Sunrise with their own eligibility rules. owned does not change who the issuer allows to hold its tokens.
  • See the Risk disclosure for the full list of risks, including the possibility of permanent loss.
